Step 8 – Naked Vowels

Step 8 teaches “Naked Vowels.” Some phonics programs refer to these as “open vowels.” The word “he” vs the word “hem” shows you that the “e” on the word “he” is “Naked.” A word that is an example of the new rule and then a contrasting word are stacked in the deck to maximize all the previous rules learned. Once a child is successful at this level, then Steps 2 -8 cards should be re-shuffled. The student’s analytical skills will be expanded as he becomes increasingly successful on sounding out these words.
